• To get a No. 1 bestseller, you must sell one book more than the No. 1 author at the time that you launch.
• Ellen’s primary focus is non-fiction, although she has worked with fiction, and other genres.
• What authors need to have in place from the outset:
o A great title and subtitle, plus eye-catching book cover.
o Identified keywords and categories.
• Leave room for market testing and adjustments, especially with regard to keywords, categories, Kindle description and in some instances back cover copy.
• Seven strategies for maximizing your book’s chances to succeed:
o TIP #1: Do your homework and interview target customers before choosing your top seven search terms. Relevant keywords make a tremendous impact.
o TIP #2: Identify a category that isn’t so competitive so you can surpass whoever is No. 1 at the time of your launch. Ellen;s strategy: Either choose two easy categories (among the possible 10) or couple one competitive category (for the views) with an easier one (likelier possibility of reaching No. 1).
o Tip #3: Organize a “book launch” or a “promotion” to raise your book’s profile and create buzz. KDP tools (Kindle Direct Publishing) can be very helpful.
o Tip #4: Take advantage of (free) announcement websites that create lists that increase reach, drive eyeballs and, as a result, can push books to No. 1.
o Tip #5: Urgency is key. Create a campaign (perhaps a discount or promo offer) that compels your audience to purchase now rather than later.
o Tip #6: Create an event to raise awareness, promote sales and help drive your book to No. 1.
o Tip #7: Brainstorm offline marketing ideas, such as press releases, local media interviews and/or speaking opportunities among neighborhood, professional or online community groups.
